You don't check a Star Trek episode called 'Kobayashi Maru' and expect everything to be unelaborate sailing. Since its introduction in The Ira of Khan, the infamous driving test for starship captains – an exam so tricksy that even the legendary James T. Kirk had to cheat to puzzle over it – has been synonymous with the unsuccessful scenario.

And piece Michael Burnham, the USS Find's new installed commanding officer, has repeatedly made it percipient she won't settle for anything but triumph – most notably in the show's season 3 finale – it's no surprise when events learn a turn for the worsened in the final act of this season premiere.

That's a marked contrast with an all-military action pre-credits sequence that replicates the giddy sensation of amusing of JJ Abrams' first Starring Trek – doing its best to splurge a criterional episode's CG budget in 10 minutes.
